About Me
My name is Kayla Cornett and I graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Colorado at Boulder, with an emphasis in news-editorial and a minor in religious studies.
Currently, I am the lead page designer for 18 weekly print newspapers, as well as special sections, special packages and any other design projects needed, including design logos, graphics, charts, etc. as needed for editors and reporters. In addition, I process photographs turned in by reporters and stringers, adding cutlines and credits when needed, editing/cropping, and changing them into CMYK format.
Previously, I was a copy editor/page designer for the Glenwood Springs Post Independent in Colorado. I designed the daily newspaper three times a week and an outdoors and entertainment section, called GO, once a week. I also wrote a high school sports roundup for the weekly Rifle paper, The Citizen Telegram, every week that was applicable. In addition, I copy edited all of the content being published in the paper during each shift.
Additionally, I was a sports writer at the Greeley Tribune in Colorado for three years as well as a copy editor/page designer. Half of my shifts were writing assignments and half were design shifts until I moved to a full time designer in my last three months at the paper. Before that, I was the Greeley high schools beat writer and helped cover approximately 18 different sports throughout each school year.
For my first job, I was the sports editor of the Colby Free Press in Colby, Kan., for about two years. I was a one-person sports department who designed the front page, inside pages and the sports page while also taking photos and occasionally covering city council, commissioners and college board meetings.
In college, I was a staff writer at the CUIndependent for the sports section. I wrote a slew of articles during this period about several sports, such as football, baseball, men's hockey, women's hockey, women's rugby and women's tennis. In my last semester, I was an intern in the sports department at the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colo., where I covered games and wrote features about area high school sports. It was a great learning experience and prepared me well for my future positions.
I also had a part-time job all four years of college at the CU Recreation Center. I was promoted in July 2010 to the position of head service supervisor of the Equipment Services department. In this position, I supervised more than 30 employees and had many duties, including, but not limited to, the hiring and training of new employees, making schedules, creating employee evaluations and copy editing employee manuals.
Outside of work, I love to hang out with friends, spend time with my boyfriend and my family as much as possible, watch sports, read, and play video games and board games.
